Discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493 and named after his brother Bartolomeo, St Barts was Sweden's only Caribbean colony from 1784 to 1878 - which is why the harbor is still called Gustavia, after King Gustav III. France reclaimed the island in 1878, and in 2007 it became a French overseas collectivity with its own status, distinct from Guadeloupe.
